Event Focuses on Ideas for Leveraging the Data Revolution to Effect Social and Economic Progress

Palo Alto, CA – June 7, 2010 – Cloudera Inc., the leading provider of ApacheHadoop-based data management software and services, today announced that Cofounder and Chief Scientist Jeff Hammerbacher will be a featured speaker atThe Economist’s Ideas Economy: Information conference on June 8th, in Santa Clara, California. The event will focus on how decision makers can better leverage the data revolution for individual, corporate and social progress. Hammerbacher, presenting a discussion entitled “The Rise of the Machines,” will join other notable senior executives, strategists, innovators and public intellectuals from around the world for the two-day conference.

Prior to founding Cloudera, Hammerbacher conceived, built and led the Data Team at Facebook and is responsible for inventing and building powerful data analysis applications on Hadoop. That system is the core of Facebook’s data platform today, improving its user experience and driving revenue. Hammerbacher also previously served as an entrepreneur in residence at the venture capital firm Accel Partners, and was a quantitative analyst on Wall Street. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Harvard University and was a Contributing Editor for O’Reilly’s “Beautiful Data.”

“The world of data is evolving at breakneck speed and the growth of data volumes is just one aspect. So it’s becoming not just useful but critical to have an infrastructure in place that is capable of both reliably collecting and rapidly transforming larger data sets,” said Hammerbacher. “We now have more raw materials to work with than ever. One of the most exciting things about the explosive growth of data sets is the opportunity they present: the past can now have an impact. It doesn’t just bear on data volume or analytical sophistication, but actually helps to shape the future.”

While the era of big data presents incredible opportunities – like smarter cities, stronger companies and better medicine – it also poses a range of challenges: storage is scarce, systems are overloaded and many believe that governments and businesses know too much. Through a mixture of engaging panel discussions, interactive dialogue, presentations and debates, Ideas Economy: Information takes a fresh look at knowledge management for the information age, examining a variety of topics, including security in the age of big data, managing the human-computer interface, how big data is changing global economics, and more.

“Information technology has always been a force for innovation and disruption,” said Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran, Global Correspondent for The Economist. “This conference will help our Ideas Economy audience better understand why the current data revolution is different and how individuals, companies and societies can benefit from the dramatic changes that are under way.”

The Ideas Economy: Information event takes place on June 7th and 8th at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California. For more information, or to register for event, visit http://ideas.economist.com/event/information.
